Question by sincere12_26: Why are STDs condidered "public health" when sex is considered a private affair?

I mean, how can someone get an STD unless they are only taking part in private affairs. "Public sex" is legal nowhere exept in The Netherlands; right?

They are highly contagious and thus are a public health matter. They also can have effects on offspring, as in the cases of congenital syphilis, congenital infection of the eyes, neonatal herpes. The effects of STD's can be more devastating than colds and influenza.
